“How Deep is Your Love” by Rev Poh on 7th April 2019

As in the story told by Pastor Poh, are we just like the young boy who made a promise over the phone on how much he loved his girlfriend and even willing to die for her, but in his promised to date the girl and to meet her on the exception that he will not turn up if it rains? So likewise, was Simon the Pharisee’s intention of inviting Jesus into his house out of love? Firstly, Simon did not offer water to Jesus to wash his feet. Secondly, Simon also did not offer Jesus a kiss. Thirdly, Simon did not offer oil on Jesus head even though Israel’s environment was always dusty and dry.

All these six series of actions were performed by the women with the alabaster jar. She did all these things with a whole contrast to Simon on how she love Jesus, like a total submissive slave girl (V44-46). Comparing the attitude of the women to that of the superficial love of Simon the Pharisee, is that, the love towards Jesus our Lord is the fruit of a reborn Christian who knew that his/her sins has been forgiven. Jesus says, “For whoever has been forgiven little love little” (v47). So are you humble enough to acknowledge yourself as a sinner with a simple faith that Jesus had forgiven you of your sins?
