“Small Groups in The Early Church” by Rev Poh on 20th Jan 2019
The Preacher Rev Poh mentioned that according to the Scriptures, everyone in the early church was in the Small Group. When it comes to Small Groups, he talked about the “4Fs” or the 4 factors that existed for Small Groups. The first “F” is Faith in the Small Group. In the early church, the apostles devoted themselves to the apostles teachings (Acts 2:42). In gathering together there must be the element of faith. In devoting to God’s Word we discover signs and wonders in our daily life.We also developed a close relationship with one another.
We share our needs and get support from one another through prayer. Next is “Fellowship” and “Food”. The disciples devoted themselves to the fellowship of the breaking of bread (Acts 2:42). All believers were together and had everything in common (Acts 2:44) which are sharing of assets, life experience, food etc (Acts 2:44b).Small groups are formed based on common age group, status, interests and gifts (e.g. those with the gift of prayer). Lastly, there is “Fun” in the Small Group. Praising God and enjoying (Fun) the favour of all the people. (Acts2:47a). These could be enjoying sports, games, outings etc. together. In all these, we can see fruits in the Small Groups i.e. the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved (v47b) which is essential for Church growth.
