“Serving with Fire” by Bro Matthew Wong on 13th Oct 2019
The preacher, bro Matthew Wong encourages us to serve the Lord with enthusiasm. He believed a vibrant church is a church filled with the power of the Holy Spirit. He said we have the Holy Spirit that dwells within us. He cited that Jesus knows on our own we cannot do much. He believed the arrival of the power of God was through wind and fire and the disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit during the day of the Pentecost (Acts 2). Wong said, “They began to declare the wonders of God in different tongues. We need to understand the work of the Holy Spirit. Otherwise, the Church will experience confusion, division, quarrels, chaos and so on. How do we know what is from God and what is not? (v3) Hence, only a Church that declare Jesus is Lord is a spirit-filled church,” he said. In addition, he said we have spiritual gifts. He noted there are different kinds of spiritual gifts and different kinds of working (1 Cor 12: 4-6). For instance, message of wisdom, faith, healing, miraculous power and so forth. He believed God provides the people with spiritual gifts and we are ought to use it for the glory of His kingdom. On another note, he shared about how should we serve God and worship Him. He said, “Is it the worldly way? Is it about education background, qualification or from the Holy Spirit? he asked. Moreover, he believed we can do everything through Him who gives us strength. (Phil 4:13). Therefore, Wong said he must utilise our spiritual gifts appropriately and ‘Fan into Flame’ the gift of God that is in us. Besides that he said, we must read the word of God with Power, Love and self -discipline (1 Cor 12, 13 & 14) to spur one another’s faith. He also said we must pray fervently for the Holy Spirit to fill us. “We must have love, for without love we are nothing. We need to serve in order to experience the power of the Holy Spirit. In serving, we have to be humble and not to seek greatness, glory and praise,” he said. Lastly, he claimed that we cannot take for granted the gift that is in us, as it is short-lived. Thus, we need to serve and use the spiritual gifts that He has given to us to serve and worship Him as He guides us step-by-step and watches over us through the Holy Spirit.
